New to SLAA – Am I an Addict?

While sex and love addicts may act out in various ways, the following behaviors have been experienced by members.

  • Having few healthy boundaries, we become sexually involved with and/or emotionally attached to people without knowing them.
  • Fearing abandonment and loneliness , we stay in and return to painful, destructive relationships….
  • We confuse love with neediness, physical and sexual attraction, pity and/or the need to rescue or be rescued.
  • We sexualize stress, guilt, loneliness, anger, shame, fear and envy.….
  • To avoid feeling vulnerable, we may retreat from all intimate involvement,…Excerpts from the Twelve Characteristics of Sex and Love Addiction ©1985

Meetings

Gathering with other sex and love addicts at an S.L.A.A. meeting is the primary way we learn how to get sober and maintain recovery.  Our meetings give us a safe place to be honest about our sexually compulsive actions and our problems of emotional dependency. Meetings provide an open environment where we talk about our addictions with people who understand.

There are currently three meeting modes:

  1. In-Person: The group meets face-to-face at a facility such as a church or public library.
  2. Zoom: The group meets by videoconference; a dial-in option is also available.
  3. Hybrid: Members have the option to join a small subgroup that meets in person or join the meeting via Zoom.

Tips for Attending on Zoom

  • Plan to join the meeting a few minutes before the scheduled start time so others can welcome you.
  • Introduce yourself to the group before the meeting begins.
  • You may participate with your camera on or off.
  • Please mute while not speaking.
  • If you prefer to listen only, you are free to pass when it’s your turn.
  • Meetings are typically one hour in duration.  We try to start and end on time.

Protecting Your Anonymity

Anyone who believes that they may have a problem with sex and love addiction is welcome.

Everyone in attendance is expected to keep the names, contact information and personal details about others they meet or learn about in S.L.A.A. to themselves.

Each meeting is led by an experienced member.

When displaying our names onscreen, introducing ourselves or addressing each other, we use first names only; some members add the first letter of their last name.

You may change how your name is displayed in Zoom.  Simply edit your personal Zoom profile.

  • ZoomProfile > Edit (button is to the right of your name) > Display Name.)
